History of FAMSA

In 1938 a Marriage Guidance Council was founded by David Mace in London. In 1954 a National family and welfare conference was held in Johannesburg which focused on family problems and disintegration. Dr David Mace and his wife, Vera, were amongst the many invited guests to attend the conference.

Shortly after the conference, the South African National Council for Marriage Guidance and Counselling was established on the 6 October 1954. FAMSA was then established for the purpose of initiating and co-ordinating resources to find other ways of ensuring healthy, stable, independent and happy marriage and family life. A new corporate image was developed hence the emblem that we see today.

FAMSA is a non-profitable organisation with 28 societies nationwide. FAMSA offers a range of services and is staffed with qualified social workers.
